Top 10 Unique Russian Foods

[written by Alden]

We have been trapped at home so there is not much to talk about. But that does not stop us from writing blogs. So we will talk about some of our favorite things in Russia. Today we will talk about unique Russian foods. most of the time I will describe it but if there is meat it will be Mila.

1. Russian mustard- It is unique because it is sometimes spicy and sometimes not.

It’s not bad. It’s not really that spicy. I will do it again. I was just acting for our blog.

2. Sirkee (“little cheeses”)- It is a sweet although some people eat it for breakfast.

It’s good but kind of sticky. It kind of tastes like cheesecake. This one is strawberry but they come in different flavors like chocolate and caramel.

3. Sea buckthorn berry juice- Sea buckthorn is a type of wild berry that is strong and sweet.

It’s not that bad. It’s kind of sour, but it’s sweet.

4. Urbech- This sauce is like a mix between peanut butter and tahini. This one is made from apricot pits.

It’s really terrible! I want to throw it up and never eat it again.

5. Papa’s Russian fish (Vobla)- It is very stinky and dry.

“I like it because it is salty and I like salt. It was better than I thought it was going to be. I didn’t know what it was going to taste like and I was kind of worried but I tried it and I liked it.”

6. Pinecone jam- It is a jam that has actual pinecones. It sort of tastes like sap.

“It’s terrible! It tastes like the forest floor or licking a tree.”

“I like it because it is a little bit sweet and a little bit bitter.

7. Beet apple juice- We bought this juice because it was the only one that the market delivery place had. I though it was going to be interesting, but…

“It tastes disgusting because it’s beet juice, what do you expect?”

8. Grenki- These are cracker-like toast things that usually don’t have too strong of a flavor. At most restaurants they are garlicky. I tried herb, garlic, and adjika flavored ones.

“They are really crunchy. It’s easy to eat them but they are hard to describe. I liked the herb ones the best.”

“They go great with beer.”

9. Chak-chak- This is the first Tatarstan dessert we ever had. Bonnie made it for us in Portland. She made it with marshmallows and honey but the ones here are just honey.

“Uh, yeah, I like it. It’s not my favorite dessert or anything but it’s pretty good. Tastes like dough and honey.”

“You eat it like it’s going out of style.”

10. A Chak-Chak sundae is our special creation. Ice cream, chak-chak, Russian candies, boiled sweetened condensed milk, and (if you are Mila) gross American chocolate sauce.

“Best thing in the world! Bonnie needs to put this on the Kachka menu!”

  1. Good job Alden and Mila. Hope the virus ends so we can visit you in Kazan and try some of these things. I would try most of the things you described—except the salty fish.

  2. I like you idea, but not sure your selection of Russian food items is the best. The sauce “urbench” I never heard and never tried. I doubt if they have it anywhere in the US.
